You can update every year, but they cost money. They sell the new maps on cd-rom which you load in your computer and transfer to the device.

1st up the Garmin brand is good and the Nuvi 350 is not a bad choice either.
Pros: It is compact (imagine a deck of cards), voice-enabled and has a strong GPS receiver and includes lots of travel-friendly features.
Cons: It is expensive, and the traffic receiver and the travel-guide programs cost extra. Also it lacks an external volume control.
I would give it a 7.5.

No. Well, you can but the results won’t be good.
The foot pod is basically a pedometer for times when you are indoors or cannot get satellite signals.
A pedometer relies on sensing when you swing your foot while walking/running and how long your stride is.
Both of those are very erratic when you are skating.

Garmin provides free map updates within 60 days of purchase for new units if newer maps are available than were included with the unit. After I registered one with 2008 maps on disk, I was able to order free 2009 map update DVD and got free map unlock code online. When I bought another model with 2008 maps, all I needed was a free 2009 unlock code online, since I already had the update DVD. Software updates for the unit itself are always free.
If you get a Garmin nuvi that already has current maps preinstalled, you may need to pay $15 to get maps on DVD (for your PC). But if maps are outdated, they will give you free update (download or DVD).
I have no experience with TomTom, but would expect something similar.

The Nuvi 350 doesn’t have a remote but I found that didn’t bother me.
I had a remote with my Streetpilot 2610 but I realized I never really used it except to make sure it worked. I wouldn’t let the remote make my decision.

Yes…..I’ve found it usually starts about a mile ahead. I bought one a couple of months ago, and my technology hating boyfriend and I are very impressed by it. The information you can get is just unbelievable. You can bring up ATM’s, hospitals, shopping and restaurants (both categorized into the type you’re looking for…), gas, etc. We went to a place about an hour south of here and my boyfriend wanted a B.B.Q. restaurant–I entered “Rest’s”, then barbecue, and it came up with about 15 of them, listing how far and direction. You just touch the one you want and hit “Go”. Unless I’m just going to a local store or something, even if I know where I’m going, I now take it everywhere, for that reason…….hope this helped. (& if you like colors, Best Buy exclusively carries pink ones, which I got!, and they had the perfect case I got for it too-just slips into–black with pink felt inside!!!-around $20)

It looks like your only option would be to look into getting the full City Navigator NT North America. You will may be able to find a way to download it for use in the mapsource program (not legal), but as it requires unlock codes that are unique to your GPS unit, I doubt that you will be able to find a downloadable version that you can transfer to your GPS.
Your best bet would be to contact Garmin Support and they can give you the legal options that your 200w would support.
