right I finally got a map update from Garmin for my 250W GPS, but I am useless at geography and it is offering all sorts of areas to update.

Anybody know where I can get a FREE GARMIN GPS UPDATE? Someone told me I don’t have to pay.
Including information like which Garmin you have (there are several dozen), what kind of maps you want (water nav, topo, driving directions) and where you are would improve the odds of getting a good answer.
Generically, the answer is “Garmin Mapsource”; the precise edition (”Inland Marine”, “Topo”, “City Navigator North America NT”, etc.) will depend on what you’re looking for..

I am looking to buy a Garmin GPS system. I heard a rumor that if you buy a new Garmin system (Nuvi series) that does not have the most updated maps preinstalled that you can get updates for free. Is this true? I can’t find anything on the Garmin website without having a serial number first.
Unfortunately, Garmin does not offer free map updates.
You can attempt seeing if there are any available updates by going to https://my.garmin.com/maps/updates.htm and entering the serial number of your device. This will let you know if there are any possible free mapping updates.
If you are getting a message informing you that your Maps are outdated, you can try installing the latest Firmware/Application update for your device. Go to http://www8.garmin.com/products/webupdater/howtoinstall.jsp to download and install any firmware/application updates for your device.
I bought it awhile ago and it says it needs an update. Ive installed the drivers in my computer but i dont know where to go to update it.
