I have tried and reviewed several. Garmin is the best, all around. It also uses up to 12 satellites for excellent coordinates, where others use 9…Battery op. is good too, and updates are simple on Internet. Excellent unit. But do not buy the cheapest one. Go at least with the 350…(Best operation is when the most satellites are being seen by the unit. With Garmin having access to 12, you have a better chance at accuracy..)
Tom Tom has a simple user interface, but garmin has better features and more products to choose from to suit your needs from GPS cycling computers to car and hiking units. It depends if you want somthing that’s easy or somthing with more features.
The Garmin Nuvi 350. I’ve had 3 GPS systems prior to getting the Nuvi. I did alot of research on it and it’s rated tops in consumer reports. I got mine off eBay for a whole lot cheaper than they want in the stores. The Nuvi also sells SD cards with travel info that’s awesome (it has tons of places to go see, when the best time to go, average temps, the best things to do while you’re there, etc), also, you can use it as a picture viewer (like a digital frame) and MP3! Very easy to navigate through. It is an awesome machine, I very highly recommend it!
