I am assuming that you did not purchase the maps on DVD (usually outdoors models) or get map updates from them.
You can do a backup to your computer, then save on a DVD for some models. Too late for this time but a good thing to do when you get it fixed.
Only way is talk to Garmin. http://www.garmin.com and go to the support page. Depending on the model, they may send you the map files or you may have to send in the unit to have it reloaded.
IIRC you have to buy the maps again from garmin since I doubt you backed up the maps to an SD card. Or download them off of a torrent site, which can get complicated, and illegal.
