No subscription necessary, except for traffic or MSN on the upperlevel models (680, 780, 880) etc....I think the 265w is a nice entry model......

Well, I am the biggest idiot when it comes to dirrections. My fiance bought me a Garmin GPS for my birthday. I love it!
No, no subscribing to anything. It would be nice to have a computer for it when you want to update the maps in it. They are way easy to use, mine was less than $300, and I an not sure what model I have. But it works great!
I can search for places, or spell the name of a place out I am looking for, they are awesome! You can also ask a store employee about them, I got mine from Best Buy, and they were very helpfull.
Good luck!

You don't for most of them (as far as I know). My gf has one, and I don't believe she pays a subscription fee or anything.
Most models should be pretty similar, so just try to find a cheap Garmin or Tom Tom or Magellan. Features that are good are traffic checking and avoidance and ability to find nearby restaurants, retail, entertainment, etc.

My wife loves hers. Get one with voice recogniton, and a big screen (4.3" minimum). That should be easy to do, those are common features. Don't waste your money on all the bells and whistles, (like traffic and weather reports, or multiple addressing), you won't use them. Go with a mid price model with a large screen.
Garmin is very easy to use, accurate, and competitively priced. The program is real intuitive, so you don't have to give it a lot of attention while driving, because it just makes sense.
You don't need to subscribe to anything, but if you want updated maps every few years, you have to pay for those.
