You can take it out of the box and use it. You need a clear unobstructed view for quickest lock on to the satellites…. you should update the poi (points of interest), by going to http://www8.garmin.com/support/agree.jsp… It will come preprogrammed with maps, but make sure you update it by using the website (instructions listed below)
Instructions for using this software
Download the self-extracting archive file for your Streetpilot i2 onto your hard drive.
Connect your Streetpilot i2 to a free USB port on your PC with the correct PC interface cable.
Unzip the files in the archive by running the downloaded executable file.
Follow the instructions provided by the launched update application on your computer.

You may need a battery or a connector to connect it to your lighter in your car for power (check the box on power requirements).
You would connect it to your computer using a USB cable.
