However – that is for the maps. You can update the UNIT software for free – there’s links on the Garmin site. A lot of the time – that doesn’t make a lot of difference.
You can’t really get around paying for the map updates – as the maps are locked to the serial number of your GPS.
We have a Garmin GPS, and depending on how old it is, you can get an update for free. But that is only for if you’ve had it less than 1 year. After that – there is no way to get it free, unless you know of a friend that has downloaded it.
On Garmin’s website, you can do a one time update for like $70 and a lifetime update for $150? (I think)
The one thing that I will say, is that Garmin told me that they are going to start releasing quarterly updates instead of just annually, so the lifetime update will pay for itself.
