I just bought my sister a Garmin Nuvi 250 which cost about £160. She finds it really to use. I would recommend a Garmin over a TomTom as the mapping for Garmin is done by driving all the roads whereas TomTom take their mapping from satellite. This gives the problem that the TomTom can try to send you the wrong way down a one way street. The Garmin is less likely to do this.
If you buy a Garmin that ends in 70 (ie. 270, 670, 770) or a Tom Tom 920t or 930…they usually come with eastern European maps built on to them. i would go o their respective websites to see exactly what the coverage for interested areas are some areas are only major cities in the country whereas some is the whole country. usually the will tell you what percentage of they country they cover and what areas specifically.
I have a Tom Tom one, I find it great and you can download maps of Eastern Europe off the internet. They have come down in price, mine cost £199.00 they are now about £89.00 you can also download “celebrity” voices too!

Whatever you get make sure that all the features are legal where you are going. For example some countries ban ALL camera detection systems
