Is The New Garmin Etrex Legend Hcx A Good Unit?
I just ordered this unit from GME Australia and can’t believe that the U.S. has had this model for nearly a year and we are just about to get our first shipment. Typical!!!
Anyways I will be using this unit with Bluechart and CitiNavigator Australia and would like to know if anybody has this unit and what they think?
I have had the origonal Etrex Vista for a number of years and just got the Etrex Vista HCx. The HCx series is wonderful.
The HCx series has only been out in the US for a couple months. The Cx was out a year or so ago.
The speed improvent is huge. Instead of waiting for the screen to redraw in the middle of looking for a corner, it pops up fast.
H – high sensitivity receiver
This picks up satelites at times when you wouldn’t have though you could. I have gotten locations (not great but solid) inside commercial buildings and on the 1st floor of my 3 story townhome.
C – color
The screen is easier to read than the old grey scale ones.
x – x-panded memory
Insted of having the map memory limited inside the unit, you can put in micro-SD cards. I got a 2 gig card for $27 (US).
The entire set of road maps for the US and Canada (NT series maps) takes just under 1 gig.
In addition to more maps being in the unit at the same time, the x units allow you to constantly log your tracks to the card in addition to the track memory in the unit.
The unit only displays what is currently in the 10000 point internal track memory but you can dump the tracks on the card to the computer. This is good when you will be away from the computer for longer than your internal track memory will last.
