I have TomTom ONE and am very satisfied with it. I also looked at Garmin, but the TomTom was the only one available with a pc interface and the ability to plan an itinerary by entering a specific starting point. The Garmin would only plan an itinerary from the current GPS fix. The Garmin probably has better North American maps.

If you have data plan with your cell phone company, you maybe able to get the GPS free. I think ATT's Blackberry 8800 has built in GPS system. This may help you saving new hardware and update map cost.

we have 2 garmins.
the tom tom is the same price, but doesn't say street names out loud. its very convenient to hear the street names, bc when u are driving you can see the street signs, and if u hear the name of the street that you need to turn on, you can easily turn while driving, and you wont have to stop all the time

I trust my life to garmin, but in driving, I would suggest you try them both out,
garmin has free updates, I don't know about tomtom
my Captain swore by her gps, which I think was garmin,
I use my garmin legend in my car, helo and on foot.
I wish I could say, hey this this is the bomb, but I can't, you need to just try both,
cities, mountains, and other things interfer with all gps on the civilian market

I got the Garmin 420 and LOVE LOVE LOVE it!!! It was easy to install from computer downloads and it works great. I am not sure about free updating -- visit their site:http://www.garmin.com/garmin/cms/site/us…
and it should tell you. Or the retailer where you are shopping can look up on their store computer and tell you there. I got mine at Best Buy and the gave me all the bells and whistles off of their product info on their computer.
