Is The Heart Rate Monitor For Garmin Forerunner 405 Worth It?
I’m getting the Garmin Forerunner 405. Is it worth it to spend the extra 50 dollars for the one with the heart rate monitor?

In my opinion it’s not. I’ve had one for a couple of months and I don’t even use it anymore. I find it very irritating to have a band on my chest all the time. A lot of the time it will fall off, if you make it tighter, it’s very uncomfortable. It’s also snapped twice since I got it and I ended up having to buying a new one. Every once in a while, the watch doesn’t register it and it ends up not even working.
I’ve never had any trouble with my 305.
Since virtually all HRMs work with a chest strap, you would have the same problem regardless of which one you choose. Personally, I have never had any of these problems with a chest strap.
One thing to consider is the routes you are using. I run in the city centre, and sometimes the connection to the satellites is broken, which means that the results are a bit erratic. I use a footpod when running to get accurate results. It works much better when I am on my bicycle (and therefore out in the open).
However, apparently the 405 is much more sensitive and picks up the satellite signals more consistently.
