Garmin C330 In An Airplane?
I have a Garmin c330. It is nice when I am on trips in the car but I am also a pilot. I find it annoying that it follows the roads even when I am in the air. Is there any way I can get it to follow a straight line in an airplane? Do I need to download software or something to accomplish this? I appreciate your help. Thanks!
They call it a “StreetPilot” for a reason. If you want an aviation based that will also work on the streets or on the water you should get a GPSMAP 296.
Unlike Garmins handheld GPS products there is actually no feature to disable the “follow road feature”. I have the 330 in my car but because I am a flight officer for our local rescue helo I use the 60csx in the air. It has the ability to quickly switch from following roads and intersections (catching bad guys) to topo terrain mapped off road mapping (picking people up). The 330 does have the ability to follow even dirt roads (providing the were existent in 2004 during that map year) but all the upgrades have are road changes. I have emailed Garmin support and they do not intend to make any of their “road/in car” series off-road capable because the OS is set up different than that of the handhelds.

P.S. If you are looking at buying a unit for your plane, I cannot recommend the 60csx with the 99$ topo map software ENOUGH!! Absolutely awesome, I hear the new Garmin colorado is cool too!
Why don’t you check with the manufacturer? This GPS is made for people to use in cars. There are GPS versions for boats and ships, too. It depends on what is in the software.
