The worst thing that can happen is that it thinks that it is in “storage mode” (like when you plug it by USB cable to a computer). In that case you will see a computer sign on the screen and you won’t be able to use the GPS while it’s charging. But there is no harm done to it.
If you don’t see the computer sign on the screen, then you are good to go.
