How Can I Do An Interval Workout With My Garmin Forerunner 405?

I just bought a Garmin Forerunner 405 and I want to do an interval workout without using the interval program. I mean I want to just start the timer and when I rest I hit the lap button, when I start again I hit the lap button. But I don’t want my rest time to be calculated into my average pace/total time. Any suggestions?
