Today’s GPS units all work fairly well. The biggest difference used to be the maps, but even the maps are similar. User configurabilty and map update costs are important considerations. Most have internal batteries that last 2 to 8 hours and can be recharging (via the cigarette lighter socket) or a usb cable.
I like the TomTom One Version 3 (~$199). The USA unit includes maps of US & Canada. In the box you will find a usb cable, a cigarette socket cable, and a suction cup mount for vehicle mounting. The box also includes an adhesive surface mount pad if you do not wish to locate the unit on the windshield in plain sight. (You may want to consider an aftermarket $19 vent mount to hide the unit).
In addition to basic navigational features, you can use your gps (for free) to detect traffic cameras. See the following page for poi file: http://www.a2dvoices.com/realitycheck/gp…
I own a Magellan, but it is a few years old already (I still love it though).
Garmin Nuvi is great.
TomTom has pretty cool portable and not too pricey systems.
Also check Navigon and Mio, two pretty good new players on the market.
I have a Nuvi 350. Very good GPS, with voice directions, mp3 player, ebooks. At amazon, they are $250, lots of other people have bought these too, my mom also has one and loves it too.
Garmin is rated #1 in the USA and TomTom is #2 so I would recommend sticking to one of these brands. The Nuvi 250 is an excellent GPS. If you want a really good deal I would get a TomTom one 3rd edition, it’s a very good GPS and can be found on sale around $160.
